I believe that everyone can learn math.
Over the past two decades of teaching and coaching
K-8 math, I have noticed, in the dozens of classrooms where I have taught and coached...when it comes to mathematics, something is missing.
In classrooms that are chock-a-block with new curricula, programming, and resources there is a common thread missing.
And that something is...BELIEF.
At an interview for an 8th-grade teaching position, the superintendent asked me:
Do you believe that all children can learn Algebra?
In my 4th grade classroom, I heard a child say:
I am afraid to make a mistake so I don't even try.
In a 1st grade classroom, a teacher said to me:
See what I am dealing with? They are coming in so low.

My work is defined by cultivating classrooms where the learners and the teachers believe in themselves and most importantly, they believe in each other.

I believe, that when it comes to
teaching math,
we have no other choice.

I foster environments where teachers learn to believe in themselves as mathematical learners.
Those teachers then create environments where students know that someone believes in them so they believe in themselves.
